Musik Aus Strom

'Exchange’ brings together 17 stunning remixes by electronic maverick producer Michael Fakesch (Musik Aus Strom / !K7) into one stunning creation. Featuring his remixes of Mr. Oizo, Booka Shade, Bomb The Bass, Von Südenfed, Herbert, Jimmy Edgar, Towa Tei, Notwist, Hexstatic and more, Fakesch adds his own unique stamp on some of today’s most inspiring artists.

Michael Fakesch used to be one half of Funkstörung (R.I.P.). From 1994 until their break-up in 2006 the two electronic wizards have been pioneers in combining weird beats, digital electro-madness and beautiful melodies. Their merciless remixes for Björk and Wu-Tang Clan marked their breakthrough and gained them international fame.

After the demise of Funkstörung Michael Fakesch concentrated on doing sound designs for commercials (e.g. Toyota, Sony, Vodafone, Kia, Philips,....) and even won the Grand Prix 2009 of the Cannes Golden Lions. He made music for short movies (e.g. 'Between'), he has reprocessed soundtracks (e.g. for the Oscar awarded Shortfilm 'Glas'), did drafts for Hollywood scores (e.g. 'Shoot Em Up') and -of course- also did remixes!

For the remix compilation 'Exchange' Michael Fakesch collected all his best remixes and therewith builds up on Funkstörung's milestones 'Additional Productions' or 'Viceversa'. On show are the funky interpretations for Herbert and Towa Tei, a nearly Radiohead'ish version of Bomb The Bass, the deep reshaping of Notwist or the (almost) dancefloor-compatible remixes for Booka Shade, Jimmy Edgar or Raz Ohara...not to forget the killer reworks for Mr. Oizo, Hexstatic or Von Südenfed.

Due to the fact most of the remixes were never released or just available in very limited amounts, this remix compilation can be considered to be a new Fakesch album, whose predecessor 'dos' (!K7 Records) is almost 3 years of age.

track by track (PTO)

1. MR OIZO Lambs Anger_Jo (Fakesch Remix) [Ed Banger]

Starting with a big Bang! At a party (and pretty loaded) Fakesch promised Quentin Dupieux (aka Mr. Oizo) to do a remix for him, which -for whatever reason- got lost...exclusively for 'Exchange' this remix has been rediscovered! Fakesch took samples of the tracks 'Jo' and 'Lambs Anger', shred them and so created a cut up-funk-beast, whose oldschool-house-middle might put a grin on all the senior-ravers out there.

2. BOOKA SHADE Mandarine Girl (Fakesch Remix) [Get Physical]

'Mandarine Girl' is probably the rave anthem of the last few years and it's almost a wonder Booka Shade let Fakesch get his fingers onto their most successful track so far...but it was worth it! Fakesch's remix is IDM by definition: intelligent and danceable!

3. SCAFFOLDING D-Tron (Fakesch Remix) [Plastic Sound Supply]

Scaffolding are long time fellows of Michael Fakesch and so this amazing glitch-acid-rework (with that certain Chicagohouse-appeal) just had to be on 'Exchange'.

4. BOMB THE BASS feat. Paul Conboy So Special (Fakesch Remix) [!K7]

Bomb The Bass aka Tim Simenon, who produced Neneh Cherry's break thru album as well as Depeche Mode's comeback album has been a fan of Funkstörung and Michael Fakesch for years. At 'So Special' Fakesch surprises with an almost Radiohead'ish soundaesthetic which screws together electronic, acoustic and the vocals of Paul Conboy to a diversified song.

5. SHADOWHUNTAZ Head In Noose (Fakesch Remix) [Mesk]

US rappers Shadowhuntaz  are well-known for their releases on Plug Research and Autechre's Skam Records. Booming bass and beats are the ingredients of Fakesch's 'Head In Noose' remix that let's you feel like driving in a tank.

6. RAZ OHARA The Burning Desire (Fakesch Remix) [Get Physical]

Fakesch strives to transform Raz Ohara's chilly arrangement into a driving track which starts minimal but suddenly erupts into a electro-storm.

7. TOWA TEI feat. Taprikk Sweezee Taste Of You (Fakesch Remix) [Hug Inc]

Pop how it should be! The maybe too kitsch original version of Towa Tei (Dee Lite!) gets reconstructed by Fakesch with some groovey basslines, dead note guitar licks and an almost straight beat programming (at least compared to Fakesch's usual rhythm crazyness ;-))!...groove is in the heart!

8. HECQ Steeltongued (Fakesch Remix) [Hymen]

Fakesch customizes a Techno-outfit for his sound designer fellow Hecq which begins with a siren-like beat until it falls down into a beautiful peace of ambient-collage at the end.

9. VON SÜDENFED The Rhinohead (Fakesch Remix) [Domino]

A semi-official for Fakesch's close friends of Mouse On Mars (who founded Von Südenfed together with Mark E. Smith of The Fall). A dirty bassline, a phat beat and Mark's cut-up moaning voice result into a track which could destroy any bunker.

10. HEXSTATIC feat. B+ Freak Me (Fakesch Remix) [Ninja Tune]

Hexstatic, the Ninja Tune Grand Daddies, famous for blending audio and visuals (like Funkstörung also was) get a special rock treatment by Fakesch which works as well on the dancefloor as on headphones.

11. KIDKANEVIL feat. Taprikk Sweezee Black Bug (Fakesch Remix) [First Word]

Like on the Towa Tei song Taprikk Sweezee, Fakesch's genius partner on the album 'dos' (!K7), is responsible for the great vocals. 'Black Bug' is one of Michael's faves: rather kaputt funk with ridiculous breaks and the absolutely sexy voice of Mr. Sweezee himself!

12. JIMMY EDGAR AKA HER BAD HABIT My Bad Habit (Fakesch Remix) [Citinite]

Warp-artist Jimmy Edgar is almost cult amongst Analogue synth freaks...Jimmy has probably accumulated all the analogue gear which ever came out and so it was clear from the beginning this remix will be pure analogue too. Classic electrofunk, relatively atypic for a Fakesch production, but therefore superb!

13. HERBERT feat. Taprikk Sweezee Something Isn't Right (Fakesch) [!K7]

The first post-Funkstörung remix and then even for the Überproducer Matthew Herbert!

Remix? Actually this is a cover version as Taprikk Sweezee replaces the brilliant voice of Dave Okumu, Dani Siciliano and Neil Thomas in an equally brilliant way. Hitech Funk par excellence!

14. JEAN JACQUES PERREY AND COSMIC POCKET Frooots/Psyche (Fakesch Remix) [Invitro Records]

Being a very good friend of Bob Moog the 80-year-old (!) and still active (!) Perrey influenced electronic music in the early days like no other. Therefore it was a big honour for Michael Fakesch when he got the offer to do this analogmonster remix.

15. NOTWIST Gloomy Planets (Fakesch Remix) [Cityslang]

Fakesch got his bavarian mates from Notwist into a new suit with subtle deep electronics and a very surprising end. Due to changes in Notwist's release schedule this remix never came to light and so it's probably one of the highlights on 'Exchange'.

16. THE BROADWAY PROJECT Paint It Blue (Fakesch Remix) [One Divided Soul]

The Bristol based Dan Berridge is the man behind the Broadway Project which is especially known for their releases on Mark Rae's Grand Central records. Fakesch's remix for 'Paint It Blue' grooves like hell and gets even trumpets scratching...dirty jazz-hiphop with that Flying Lotus flavour.

17. FRANZ KIRMANN Little Baby Eyes (Fakesch Remix) [Lobe Records]

The most laid-back song of 'Exchange' reminds -intended- of old Boards Of Canada songs. It is the easy-going end of a pretty exciting compilation which proves the Funkstörung chapter only has come to half the end.
