Detroit’s Soiree Records returns in October with the four-track compilation EP, ‘Clockwerk’.
The EP opens with ‘Stranger It Feels’ by Drivetrain aka label head, Derrick Thompson. One of Detroit’s unsung heroes, Derrick has amassed a huge catalogue over the years with releases on labels like Basic Energy, End Recordings, Authentic Music, Moods & Grooves, Three to Five, Little Angel, Yore, Evolution and Katoku. He also recently returned to his God of the Machine alias for Specimen Records run by RIP (Clink Street, ’88) legend, Paul Rip. Here, he freezes time with a multi-functional floor-banger / DJ tool, fully stocked with sonic illusion and legitimacy. The tribal vocal intro paves the way for combustible percussions and a toxic bass line.
Glasgow’s Jace Syntax is no stranger to Soiree, having released tracks for the label as well as appearing on the likes of Brique Rouge, Soma, Mutate, Crayon, Sulamuse and Red Robot. Pounding rhythms join a subsonic groove cutting through a deeper, melodic soundscape on his offering, ‘Basicz’. Add finely tuned vocal samples and harmonic ambience for a pure subterranean, late night audio rendezvous.
Hailing from Meaux (France), Cloudmaster Weed also makes a welcome return to Soiree. Originally growing up in the Hip-Hop culture of the 80s, he was a dancer and rapper during the 90s, before becoming a House Music addict. With influences covering Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Afrobeat and Disco, his first passion is still the sound of Detroit. ‘Consciousness’ is an aggressive onslaught of smoke-stacked electronic musicality. The aesthetic bass escorts a mind-expanding squad of voices, pads and effects to a point of delinquency.
Another producer who started out listening to Hip Hop but quickly feel in love with Detroit’s sounds is Detune from Ghent (Belgium). His track, ‘Duality' is an electrifying, multifaceted production, that effortlessly seizes it's own identity. Dynamic chords resonating through the magnetic, percussive palpitation produce a sophisticated unyielding debut.
The sound of absolute intelligence and truth... like Clockwerk.
