#114 - Pearl Vision
Having released their debut EP ‘Storm’ last year the pair have been busy in the studio working on new material, with the prolific Dany also about to self release new music on his RMR label. Growing up with a mutual love of Belgium’s well-established techno scene the pair build upon a deep minimal groove that develops from Ross From Friends, Robag Wruhme and Radio Slave before building pressure with Blawan, Robert Hood, Truncate and Mark Broom and then cooling off with a brace of their own releases sandwiching Ben Long & Oliver Way’s Late Night Mix of ‘Lucky Dip’.
Recording now for over a decade, Dany Rodriguez has released on a host of high profile labels including his own, RMR. Tindra also has a long background in electronic music and began spinning records in the early ‘90s but she chose not to play publicly until last year. Nevertheless over the years she and Dany have not only shared the clubbing experience but also time in the studio where Tindra has brought her own unique ideas and they soon discovered that they worked in emotional harmony. Thus Pearl Vision was born. Delivering their first Pearl Vision release, the ‘Storm EP’ last year provided a calling card of five varied techno cuts, from sublime Detroit grooves to tougher minimal beats and glowing electro grooves. Already in the studio to develop further Pearl Vision releases, expect to hear more from them very soon…
Q&A with Pearl Vision
- Let’s start with the mix. Did you approach this differently to a club set and how does it work with both of you playing?
Yes we approach it a different way compared with a club session, as we wanted to let the records playing probably longer than if we mix in a club. We mix this session as B2B, 1 mix each other. The playlist is based on artists we love and feel their music. We try to create a great story in 1 hour including both of our favourite tracks.
- Can you remember when you first became aware of ‘electronic’ music as opposed to just music on the radio?
This was really something special when we discovered this music around 1989 with the famous title (CONFETIS The Sound of C). It is funny because we had both been aware of this song and got attracted more and more to electronic music through it. And this was definitely something different compared to what we usually heard on the radio. It was something more mysterious in that time.
- What was the music that defined your youth?
We were both fans of GOOD LIFE by INNERCITY. If we have to choose one title, this is the one.
- What were your early clubbing experiences?
For Sandrinne, she started in 1994 at FUSE, MONTINI and EXTREME - all famous clubs in Belgium. For Dany the very first experience was at I Love Techno in Ghent (BE) and Fuse Brussels in 1997. For both of us it was a revelation.
- How long have you been working in the studio together?
We started creating songs together in the studio two years ago. As Tindra always wanted to give her proper view and idea we decided to create from zero together and that was how the first Pearl Vision's titles were born.
- Is there a ‘vision’ for Pearl Vision?
Yes it is. Together we work to give a proper idea about what we have in mind. We wanted to reflect both of our feelings for our future music. We like to mix our every day life into our creations - emotional, melodic, energetic, melancholic and so on. As we have different ideas coming every day it’s always very interesting and always very unique to make it work behind the machines together.
- Did you first connect through music?
It is a very interesting question that we never ask each other. :-) We can say that yes definitely the electronic music make us connected that’s for sure.
- What have been your favourite parties to play at?
For Dany the best party has been at FUSE club in 1997 with Dave Clarke playing, the crowd and the manner how he played records was just amazing. On Tindra's side, MAYDAY in Germany in 1996 was her very first festival and she was so impressed about the love and energy electronic music can create.
- Someone comes to visit you in Liege for the weekend. Where would you take them for food, drinks, dancing and culture?
We will bring the person to eat a ‘Boulet frite mayonaise’ which is a speciality in Liege that we both really love and can't imagine to live without. After that we will for sure bring the person to our monthly event called LIEGE <3 ACID.
- What production plans do you have for 2019?
We are glad to have just confirmed our second EP ‘TWIN MINDS‘ on EPM Music. It is really amazing for us to work with such a great team. The chance we have makes us more and more confident for our future creations and work. We are currently working on other new titles and also coming soon a remix on the LP from the Detroit Grand Pubahs aka Oliver Way & Paris, this LP just amazed us and we feel so inspired about it. We also think about starting our first LP during this year.
