#60 - Deboa
Following John Heckle’s stunning techno mix, the next release in the EPM Podcast series finds London’s Deboa taking the reins. Moving towards a more house tempo mix, Deboa starts with one of the out right tunes of 2014, Leon Vynehall’s stunning ‘Inside the Deku Tree’. With additional quality tuneage provide by the likes of Deamonds, Mr. G, La Fluer, Smokin Jo, Moderat, Ashworth, Petrichor, Last Magpie, Michael Bibi and more, Deboa gives us a well-crafted view of the Native City sound.
Native City Records co-founder Deboa has been DJing across the UK since 1997. From record collecting in his native South London, Deboa spent 5 years in Manchester, where he DJed under the alias Felony regularly playing at classic clubs and nights such as Sankey's Soap, Spellbound, Viagra Falls plus his own, Fall-Out.
2008 saw Deboa team up with another South London native, long-time friend and collaborator Hannah Holland becoming resident at the notorious Batty Bass. In 2012 Deboa and Hannah formed Native City a sister label to Batty Bass dedicated to groove based House and Techno.
Having previously worked at some of music's most influential labels (including Hospital Records, Buzzin' Fly, Rough Trade, Sony and Grand Central), as well as forming his own creative music agency Mix 'n' Sync, Deboa's style touches on many bases. West African poly-rhythms, melody and sub-bass influences his selections which primarily focus on various forms of House and Techno. Deboa will effortlessly move from deep, 'brukky' and subby House and Techno whilst slipping back into his Jungle and Drum and Bass roots when the occasion arises…
Production wise, his releases include the 'Fight' EP plus remixes for Smokin Jo, DJ Deamonds and Michael Bibi on Native City Records.

Q&A with Deboa (Native City)
1. Please give us a quick run through the music in the mix. What inspired you to choose these tracks?
It’s a melting stew of Native City tracks past, present and future with a few tracks that I’ve been playing of late…
2. How did you first come into contact with the Batty Bass crew?
I’ve known Hannah and Art Director Alex Noble since our school days…so a good number of years now.
3. What were your years in Manchester like? How has that period influenced your music?
Manchester’s a formidable city and has an incredible heritage in music. Studying, living, working and DJing in the city opened me up to a world of music, loads of characters and a certain vibe.
4. You have worked at some very influential record labels. What were the biggest lessons that you took forward into launching your own Native City label?
I think the most important thing is to let the music and creativity lead – all else will fall into place if you keep plugging away.
5. What plans do you have for the label over the next 6 months?
We’ve got a really healthy release schedule that we’re pretty proud of coming up – a debut from Rubinkart@ (aka Drum ‘n’ Bass’ Keaton), Kemback, a producer hailing from Bristol, a ‘Native Souls’ EP with tracks from a number of Native City producers as well as a few things I’m not at liberty to talk about just now. Plus I’m sure we’ll do another party soon!
6. What is your favourite London venue?
Right now in terms of clubs I think the Dance Tunnel – excellently programmed, great sound plus I can run upstairs for a pizza…
7. How would you spend a non-musical weekend?
If the sun’s out a BBQ on a roof over looking London.
8. Was there a particular moment growing up when you suddenly got dance music?
Going to Labyrinth in Dalston for the first time was probably a bit of a moment.
9. Who are your drum n bass heroes?
From a DJing perspective Randall never disappointed. Labels like Reinforced, 31 Records, V, Prototype, Hard Leaders, Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware, Dread, Ram, Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Soul:r, Commercial Suicide, Creative Source, all churned out classic tracks which were an inspiration
10. Which 1 single would you most likely take with you to a desert island?
Roforoforo Fight – Fela Kuti
