The duo of Figure-Ground release their debut album following three consecutively numbered EPs. ‘Reality Revision’ uses both sound and vision in a sonic exploration of virtual reality and new technologies.
Figure-Ground will focus on the philosophical and scientific explanations of reality. The music will vary from mechanical to melodic to industrial and atmospheric. The musical contrast reflects the contrasting views on the nature of reality.
The Figure Ground virtual worlds aim to explore the subjective reality created through experiencing audiovisual stimuli. Each of Figure-Ground’s virtual worlds presents an objective reality, generated and adapting to the audio input for each track. Upon interaction through the various interfaces, online, mobile, live performance and VR, the user experiences a subjective reality resembling synthetic qualities.
“With Reality Revision we wanted to create an experience where the viewer could explore sound and vision in a way that linked the two intrinsically. By creating exportable virtual realities that are part generated, part influenced and part driven in time to the music itself. Developing three dimensional, virtual reality archipelagos that are exportable and interactive through many different media technologies. “
Figure-Ground want the viewers to be able to view these “worlds” as both a group experience, an online platform and as a sound and light installation with more intimate portals into the VR worlds based around virtual reality headsets. By using these new technologies in unusual settings and for specific digital music tracks, Figure-Ground are seeking to push the boundaries between music and video closer still, as the worlds generated during this ongoing project bounce, move, swing and generate randomly to the beats of the digital music they form part of. *
The duo and realization of Figure-Ground covers a musical journey of over 20 years. The music draws influence from hardcore drum and bass and breakbeat from the 90s. The influences are varied but the output is constructed using electronic musical instruments that recreate the feelings and emotions of the raves of yesteryear, creating a sound for the dance floors of today. Figure-Ground balance their high-energy productions with tracks that offer a deep introspective beauty. Rich and layered textures interwoven with vocal passages that create dream like atmospheres. This side of the sound is loaded with feeling and well crafted melodies that express the universal language of emotion.
*The live performance is directed towards both audience and individual participation. A projection screen displays the virtual world interface, which is controlled and adapted live via midi input from the VJ’s. The use of additional VR headsets could allow individuals to take turns controlling and experiencing the worlds from a singular perspective. Within an art installation setting, the virtual worlds would be projected around the four walls of a room to fully engulf the audience. In a festival environment, inflatable dome structures could be hired to project a 360 degree experience within the structure for a more immersive experience.
