A legend in his own city, Detroit's Filthiest has to be one of the most underrated Detroit producers internationally. Over the last 20 years, Julian Shamou has released under a number of guises, be it DJ Nasty, 313 Bass Mechanics, Digitek or now Detroit’s Filthiest. He’s shown his versatility by tackling various genres with ease, whether it’s Detroit’s Ghetto Tech sound as witnessed on his recent ‘Underground Sound Of Detroit’ EP for UK label Moveltraxx, the raw Drum & Bass of his previous MCEC release ‘Murda Bizzness’ or Techno, found on this latest offering ‘Watching You’.
Delving into his archives, the previously unreleased ‘Watching You’ was originally produced in 2003 and combines hard-hitting 4x4 techno drums with nasty basslines and dark twisted vocals. The release features the original version, plus a 128 BPM Mix for a fresh take.
Completing the EP, we look to one of Detroit’s new breed of protagonists, Marshall Applewhite who’s been steadily turning out his unique stylings on the YoSucka label (which incidentally released Julian’s ‘Guess Who’s Back’ EP as DJ Nasty in 2013). Marshall’s remake of ‘Watching You’ deepens the tone, while playing with the chord progression, and delivering an instrumental to boot.
