Calling Broadsword / Standing Alone Remixes
For the first in a series of remix EPs, two tracks from Ben Long’s album ‘Standing Alone’ are reworked by Blueprint’s James Ruskin and Victor Santana from Madrid’s Chaval Records.
‘Standing Alone’, released in April is the debut solo album from this long-standing UK techno DJ/producer who draws upon two decades worth of techno, electro and electronic music production experience. As one half of the Space DJz, alongside Bandulu’s Jamie Bissmire, Ben Long collaborated on many releases including albums for Soma and Advanced as well as a multitude of single and EP releases for the likes of Perc Trax, NovaMute, Infonet and their own Potential Recordingz. The album shows us the full range of Ben Long’s talents, taking us from the gritty cavernous tunnels of techno clubland to the intricate circuit bending of the likes of Autechre and The Black Dog and back again.
On the first remix EP, James Ruskin turns his skilful hand to the crackling and dubby ‘Calling Broadsword’. The choppy beats and reverse effects swim around a heavy bass, with just the right amount of experimental meandering to keep things interesting on the dancefloor.
Victor Santana gives up two mixes of the pulsating album title track, ‘Standing Alone’ next. Where the original was a slice of deep Electronica, Santana’s Remix mutates it into a kicking Techno workout with infectious drum patterns, while his Dub version is a warm dubby roller with a cascading rhythm.
